Episode 5: SUMMER

It’s summertime at last and in celebration of the season, The Shaking Bog heads to the West of Ireland to meet some of our finest artists, all of whom draw inspiration from the landscape and nature of the region.

Once more we present a broad canvas of artists including - basket weaver and fine artist Joe Hogan; poet and nature writer Sean Lysaght; writer, surfer and environmentalist Easkey Britton; poet and novelist Elaine Feeney; musician and composer Ronan Browne.

Produced by The Shaking Bog in collaboration with Coillte Nature, Mermaid Arts Centre and The Arts Council. Written & presented by Catherine Nunes, edited by Bjorn MacGiolla, mixed by Steve McGrath, with theme music composed by Ray Harmon.

Easkey Britton -  a writer, big-wave surfer and marine social scientist at NUIG (National University of Ireland Galway). Sean Lysaght - a celebrated poet and nature writer, Sean Lysaght recently published Wild Nephin is available from Mayo Books, Castlebar (https://www.mayobooks.ie/Wild-Nephin-Lysaght)        

The poems he reads for the podcast are A Field Guide from Scarecrow (1998) and Merlin at Tarsaghaunmore from The Mouth of a River (2007). Both collections are published by Gallery Press (https://www.gallerypress.com/authors/g-to-l/sean-lysaght/).

Ronan Browne - the grandson of legendary folk singer Delia Murphy, Ronan is a leading light in the world of Irish traditional music. Best known for the uilleann pipes, he also plays the flute and  tin whistle. As well as being a solo musician and composer, he was a member of the distinctive folk-music group CRAN and the Afro Celt Sound System. (www.ronanbrowne.com)

Joe Hogan - a traditional basket maker and fine artist. Joe has worked from his studio on the banks of Loch na Fooey in Connemara, since 1978. Regarded as one of Ireland’s master craftsmen, Joe has gained a worldwide reputation for his work. (www.joehoganbaskets.com)

Elaine Feeney -  a poet, playwright and novelist. Elaine recently won numerous awards for her first novel As We Were published by Vintage (2021) (www.penguin.co.uk). Her poem Bog Fairies is from one of three collections, The Radio was Gospel - published by Salmon Poetry (2013) (www.salmonpoetry.com)
